The Amanda & Isaac Martin Fellowship for a Singer

Praised for her musicianship and shimmering tone, soprano Alexandra Rose Hotz is equally at home on the opera and recital stage. With Eastman Opera Theatre, she has performed as the title role in Handel’s Alcina, Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor and was to play Johanna in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, prior to its cancellation due to Covid-19. With Miami’s Opera Theatre, she performed as Monica in Menotti’s The Medium, Anne Egerman in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, and Rose in Weill’s Street Scene.

Alexandra has a passion for American music written by contemporary composers. She was recently seen in Here be Sirens (Suite) by American composer Kate Soper. During this performance, Alexandra played prepared piano and utilized extended vocal techniques. She also worked with Stephen Hartke on a performance of his piece, Iglesia Abandonada for soprano and violin, with Ben Moore on selections from his song cycle, So Free Am I, with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Anthony Davis on an aria from his opera Tania, and with Tom Cipullo on his cantata, A Visit with Emily, and song cycle, Of a Certain Age. This past summer, she attended the Mostly Modern Festival as a Voice Fellow, where she performed works by Rob Patterson and debuted works written for the festival.

As a concert soloist, she has performed in Haydn’s The Creation, Bach’s BWV 105 and 51 cantatas, and Handel’s Messiah. Most recently, she performed Mahler’s Second Symphony at Kodak Hall with the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra.

Alexandra received an Encouragement Award at the 21-22 and 22-23 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competitions at the Buffalo/Toronto District. This spring, she received third place in the Friends of Eastman Opera Competition and second place at the Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition. She is a finalist for the National Opera Association’s Carolyn Bailey Argento Vocal Competition in the Artist Division and will compete in the conference in January, 2024.

Originally from Toledo, OH, she recently received the Doctorate of Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music, where she also received her Masters under the tutelage of Anthony Dean Griffey. She completed her undergraduate studies in Vocal Performance and Musical Theatre at Miami University in Oxford, OH, studying with Dr. Alison Acord.
