Cincinnati-based collaborative pianist and vocal coach Matthew Umphreys specializes in opera, chamber music, and new music.
Matthew worked as a vocal coach and pianist for touring productions of The Pirates of Penzance and The Marriage of Figaro with Cincinnati Opera, and spent the summers of 2013 and 2015 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas as coach and pianist for Opera in the Ozarks. He has also played for Summertime Players in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and for two summers with Sherrill Milnes and VOICExperience in Orlando, Florida and Savannah, Georgia.
Matthew also regularly performs new music. He is a founding member of All of the Above, a contemporary chamber music ensemble. The group has performed works by Arnold Schoenberg, Andy Akiho, Samuel Crane, many CCM composers and recently commissioned a piece by David Clay Mettens. All of the Above continues in the 2016-17 year as the official next-generation ensemble of concert:nova, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's new music chamber ensemble which aims to "re:invent the classical music experience."
Matthew graduated from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music with his Master's degree in Collaborative Piano in 2014, and is currently the Director of Music at Columbia Baptist and Linwood Baptist churches in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was also recently hired on as adjunct faculty/staff pianist at Xavier University. Matthew is a native of Council Bluffs, Iowa and received his undergraduate degree in Piano Performance and Business Management in 2011 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
